...the director of the electronic systems for the 787, Mike Sinnit, also briefed us on his programs. Some highlights:

* Boeing is modifying the flight controls first developed for the 777 to provide a smoother ride on the 787. The 777 has a system of sensors that detect changes in air pressure as gusts of wind hit the plane from the side. Those sensors trigger automatic moves by the 777’s rudder to reduce side-to-side tail-wagging.

The 787 takes that a step further, Sinnit said, by introducing sensors that will trigger moves by the control surfaces on the wings to reduce up-and-down movements.

Smoothing out the ride will reduce the stress on the plane, which means Boeing won’t have to beef up certain structures as heavily. That will save about 2 tons on each plane, Sinnit said.

* Boeing is installing head-up displays as standard equipment on all 787s, despite the feeling from some airline CEOs that the system is a luxury their pilots don’t need.

“We believe in our hearts that they give you an additional margin of safety,” Sinnit said. “Every airline’s going to have head-up displays and that’s just the way it’s going to be.”

*Boeing wanted wireless IFE systems for the 787, but suppliers said the company was dreaming, Sinnit said. “The people developing IFE systems said it couldn’t be done,” he said. “we showed them it was possible.”

Eliminating the wiring to each seat makes it easier to install, modify and replace the entertainment hardware, Sinnit said.
